What Is Bruxism?

What is Bruxism?

Do you find yourself waking up with a stiff, sore jaw? Do you experience mild headaches more often than you should? You may be suffering from a condition known as Bruxism, which is excessive clenching and grinding of the teeth. Those who have Bruxism may unknowingly grind their teeth while they are awake or more commonly, during sleep.

Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep-related disorder. Individuals who clench or grind their teeth during sleep are more likely to experience other sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea and snoring.

What are the causes and effects of Bruxism?

The singular cause of Bruxism cannot be pinpointed, however, there are several risk factors that may increase your chance of experiencing Bruxism. These risk factors include:

  • Age. It is very common for adults to experience Bruxism due to the stressors they may experience from day to day. Children commonly experience Bruxism as well, however, it is known to dissipate as they get older.
  • Increased stress or anxiety. Stress and anxiety, as well as anger, can lead to teeth grinding.
  • Hereditary. Bruxism tends to be hereditary; therefore, if your parents or immediate family members suffers with Bruxism, it is not uncommon for you to have Bruxism as well.

Bruxism can affect people in several ways. Some of the damaging effects may be short-term and disappear when Bruxism is treated. Others who go an extended amount of time without being treated may suffer from long-term, possibly permanent effects.

These effects include:

  • Damage to the teeth, restorations, jaw or crowns.
  • Limitation of mouth opening.
  • Severe facial or jaw pain.
  • Inflamed and receding gums.
  • Tension-type headaches and earaches.
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).

Ways To Keep A Knocked Out Tooth Alive

How to Save a Knocked Out Tooth:

Did you know the technical term for a knocked-out tooth is an “avulsed” tooth? Getting a tooth knocked out can be a very alarming and undesired emergency. When something like this happens, people fail to make the best decision in regards to saving their tooth. At Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry, we care about your smile. From experience, we understand that making a wise decision in the heat of the moment is not an easy task. To ensure that you are prepared to act quickly and appropriately in the face of a tooth avulsion, we have provided you with an emergency “Tooth Survival Guide.” Included in this guide is every tip you should be aware of.

At the moment a tooth is knocked out, its root becomes unattached from the bone. The nerves, blood vessels, and supporting tissues that surround the avulsed tooth are immediately damaged. If proper action is taken, the root of the tooth can reattach itself to the bone once the tooth is put back into place.

Tooth Survival Guide:

At the moment your tooth first gets knocked out, try your best to stay calm! Your first order of business will be to find your tooth and hold it by the crown – avoid touching the root. If the tooth needs to be cleaned, very briefly run the tooth under water to rinse it off. Now, pay attention; this next part is important! Time will pass before you are able to seek medical attention for your avulsed tooth. In the meantime, there are steps you can take towards saving your tooth.

Your options for tooth revival include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Replant your tooth and bite on a handkerchief to hold it in position
  • Place tooth in a glass of milk
  • Place tooth in saline
  • Place tooth in a suitable storage medium i.e. Hank’s balanced salt solution
  • Place tooth in a cup of your own saliva, or preferably, wedged in your mouth between your gums and teeth
  • Place tooth in coconut water and green tea

Now, get to a dentist as soon as you can!

What Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry Will Do:

You may be wondering what to expect when you arrive at the dentist. We can assure you that the professionals here at Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry will pick up right where you left off. Hopefully, within the hour of your tooth loss, you will have replanted your tooth successfully. If you made it to us relatively quickly, we will replant the tooth for you. This is advised to be done within an hour of tooth loss.

One of our dentists will then examine you thoroughly and decide what is best to do for your specific situation. We may either perform a root canal treatment right away or splint the avulsed tooth to the teeth on either side. This will hold the tooth in place for several days. You will then revisit to complete the tooth-saving process and get you smiling again in no time.

Call (212)581-1091 with your questions and concerns. We are here to save the day and save your smile!

Skeptical? Here are the facts: Studies have shown that the inside of a banana peel is rich in potassium, magnesium, manganese, and other naturally whitening minerals. “The rich minerals in a banana are absorbed into your enamel and have healthy whitening effects.”

ZOOM! WHITENING

Zoom! Whitening is a professional whitening treatment offered at Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry.

Last, but certainly not least, Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry offers a highly effective teeth whitening treatment. In office, or at home, we give our patients the option of where they get their whitening done.

Our whitening methods are the most safe and precise out of every method mentioned above, as a professional is conducting every step of your whitening. For the in-office whitening, our dentists will apply a protective layer on your gums to prevent the whitening gel from harming your gums. The whitening gel is then applied to the enamel of your teeth.

This is a photo of a patient receiving a Zoom! Whitening treatment.

The at-home bleaching requires our patients to come into the office for impressions to be taken of their teeth. These impressions will allow for perfectly fitted, customized trays. The trays are to be worn with the whitening gel overnight until the desired color is reached.

Invisalign vs. Smile Direct Club: What’s the Difference?

With the increasing popularity of Smile Direct Club and the credibility of Invisalign, it has become difficult for patients to make an educated choice between the two teeth straightening treatments. We have decided to provide you with the insight necessary to choosing the best solution for you. Let us set straight the path to setting straight your teeth!

Invisalign

The thought of somehow getting straight teeth without the unsightliness of metal braces was, at one point in time, merely an idea. What would be better than obtaining the perfect smile you have always wanted, in a timely and inconspicuous fashion? Wheels began to turn and strides were taken towards this idea becoming a real product. In 1997, Align Technology was founded to develop and manufacture the most inconspicuous, effective form of braces. In May of 2000, Invisalign was officially made available to the public.

On the left are standard metal braces. On the right is a clear, effective Invisalign aligner.

Open bite, overbite, underbite, crossbite, overly crowded, gapped teeth — Invisalign is the answer. Made up of a series of invisible aligners that go unnoticed to the public, the patient is able to smile freely throughout the entire treatment process. They are removable, comfortable, and they work hard to straighten your teeth. How exactly does this happen? We’re glad you asked. Each patient who comes into our office to receive Invisalign gets a personal assessment. This assessment consists of taking impressions, which guarantee the utmost effectiveness of your aligners.

How Invisalign Works

Each set of Invisalign aligners are made with 3-D computer imaging technology, and are to be worn for approximately two weeks. The duration of each set, however, will vary from patient to patient. With each set, you will find your teeth slowly, but surely shifting into their optimal position. The tell-tale sign of Invisalign’s success is the change in the aligners fit. At the start of a set, the aligners will typically feel snug. Towards the end of a set, they will feel looser. Though patients will come into the office to make sure everything is going according to schedule, they will know the aligners are working their magic by the end of each set.

3d Imaging process for Invisalign

Lastly, patients are required to remove the aligners only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. The question of how long the Invisalign process lasts is largely decided upon the patient’s specific situation. Typically, total treatment time can average anywhere from 9-15 months. At the end of the Invisalign process, the patient will receive an invisible retainer to maintain their straight teeth and beautiful smile.

These are a depiction of what the clear aligners look like

Since Invisalign has become the leading treatment for straightening teeth, various companies have tried to reproduce the technology and teeth-straightening service. The idea of clear braces was imitated in hopes to provide patients with a similar, more affordable experience to Invisalign. This has made it difficult for the public to make the best choice when it comes to which treatment will be the most effective for their smile. Because of this, we will explain the difference between Invisalign and Smile Direct Club.

Smile Direct Club

Like Invisalign, Smile Direct Club similarly uses clear braces to inconspicuously straighten teeth with a series of aligners. The two major differences between the two are:

  • creation and delivery of treatment plan
  • pricing

Smile Direct Club is strictly virtual. The entire journey is planned by the patient through the computer. The patient does not deal with physical doctors or office visits. Instead, they order each new step through the computer, from impressions to aligners. Compared to Invisalign, the quality of the impression taken at home and sent out to be made can never be as precise as the impression that will be taken in a professional office. Therefore, each aligner will be affected.

This photo is showing how each step in the Smile Direct Club process is done through the computer and shipped to your home.

The argument has been made that the precision of Smile Direct Club will always fall short when compared the the precision that Invisalign offers. Each aligner is made to perfection, and any offsets are corrected upon office visits. Though Smile Direct Club is a cheaper option, the results are not as promising as the results Invisalign will offer.

The Cost of Root Canal Treatment

“Root canal” has historically been associated with severe pain. The Cost of Root Canal Treatment

Here at Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry, we understand that the term “root canal” has historically been associated with severe pain. Regardless of whether or not a patient has had a pleasant root canal experience, the procedure has continuously failed to shake it’s bad reputation. In turn, we have decided to use this forum to present you with a different perspective on root canal treatment.

Myth Busted

Technology is ever-evolving, right? The same concept holds true for dental technology, too. Over the years, advancements in dental technology have made root canal treatment much different than it used to be. Though others may be stuck on it’s painful reputation, you can rest assured that root canal treatment is now a comparatively simple and painless procedure. In combination with the latest technology, our expertise here at Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry  adds to the simplicity of the root canal procedure.

What Is Root Canal?

In case you weren’t sure of  root canal treatment’s purpose, we’ll explain. Essentially, root canal treatment saves your original tooth/teeth. An infection in the root of the tooth often causes severe pain and inflammation. Root canal treatment sets out to relieve that pain and inflammation without extracting the infected tooth/teeth. The doctor who specializes in such treatment goes into the infected part of the tooth called “pulp,” the center of the tooth that consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. The doctor first removes the infected pulp — then cleans, fills, and seals the tooth to send it on the road to infection-free recovery.

To learn about the common causes of Dental Pulp Disease, read this article.

Root Canal Cost

The cost of root canal differs from patient to patient. Right off the bat, a patient’s situation largely correlates to the expense of the treatment. If the patient needs root canal on more than one tooth, the cost increases. In addition, the type of tooth must be taken into consideration. What does that mean? To put it simply, anterior teeth and posterior teeth present a cost difference.  Posterior teeth (molars) tend to have 3-4 roots, where anterior teeth (front teeth) typically have one root. The treatment for a molar will cost more than the treatment of a tooth with a single root.

Root Canal Alternatives

The alternatives to root canal include but are not limited to extraction, ozone gas, and natural remedies.

Extraction – Extracting the infected tooth completely eliminates the need for root canal treatment. Extraction will ultimately require tooth replacement of some kind, i.e.: implant, bridge, partial denture.

Image result for tooth extraction

Ozone Gas – Ozone gas serves to ‘flood’ the root cavity in attempt to kill the bacteria.

Natural Remedies – Eating healthier foods and eliminating foods that are high in sugars, preservatives, etc. can aid in maintaining healthy teeth. This alternative is solely a preventative alternative.

Saving the original tooth through root canal is ultimately the most cost effective option.

Recapping The Process

  • Endodontist consult
  • Confirmation that root canal is needed
  • Confirmation of which teeth need treatment
  • Discussion of insurance / Out of pocket expense
  • Treatment performed
  • Goodbye pain, infection, and discomfort

What to expect when getting dental implants

You’ve decided that getting dental implants is the best investment that you can make in your smile. After all, they have a higher success rating than any other modern-day tooth replacement. So now that you’re ready to move forward with rebuilding your smile, you want to know what to expect…or more specifically, how long the entire implant process takes.

The Dental Implant Process

Implant treatment is generally broken up into a couple of different phases. Assuming you’ve already had any infected teeth removed and your consultation is complete, an implant procedure typically goes through three stages:

1. Surgical Placement
Implant surgery is what most people fear most, but it’s a very simple and straightforward process. In fact, it’s easier than having a tooth pulled. With the aid of 3D imaging, your implant placement usually only takes about 20-30 minutes.

2. Healing
After your implant surgery, you will need to wait anywhere from 3-6 months for the new “roots” to integrate with your body. What’s happening is new bone grows around the implant, permanently fusing it into place. We call this stage “osseointegration.” Once it’s achieved, your implant isn’t going anywhere!

3. Final Restoration
Now is the moment you’ve been waiting for! The top of your implant is uncovered and a small abutment is attached. Then, we anchor a permanent new crown, bridge, or denture on top of the abutment.

What Happens in the Meantime?

Depending on where your new dental implant is located, we may place a temporary restoration that covers the area, so that you don’t have to feel embarrassed about having a missing tooth. This small flipper fills in the open space while the area heals, but once the implant is fully integrated with your mouth we’ll install a permanent crown or bridge.

Are you ready to get started? Schedule your implant consultation today, and in just 4-7 months you could have a permanent new smile.

Is Sedation the Best Painless Dental Option?

What’s keeping you from scheduling your next visit with the dentist? Is it nervousness or anxiety about how the appointment will feel? Then you might be an ideal candidate for sedation dentistry.

While various types of dental sedatives work in different ways, most patients report a pain free experience…or don’t recall the visit at all! That’s because some types of medications are also amnesiacs, causing you to forget what even happened.

When to Consider Sedation Dentistry

How do you know if it’s the right time to ask for sedation during your appointment? Here are a few of the most common situations for when it might be appropriate:

• Overcoming anxiety or fear of the dentist
• Longer procedures
• Multiple phases of treatments that can be completed in one visit
• You prefer to relax, just for convenience’s sake
• More invasive therapies, such as oral surgery
• Treating a painful dental emergency

Sedation dentistry is extremely safe. However, you’ll need to talk to our NYC dentist to review your health history and current medications, to ensure that you’re a candidate for this service.

Where Can I Find a Dentist that Accepts My Insurance?

One of the best ways to ensure that your dental care is affordable, is to find a dentist who accepts your dental insurance.

Who is the Best Dentist My Insurance Covers?

What does it mean when you as a dentist, “Do you take my insurance?” Depending on what you’re looking for, the answer can go a few different ways.

Here are a few examples:

• An in-network dentist is required to accept your plan, because they have a signed agreement with your dental insurance carrier. Your insurance company can provide you with a list of these preferred, in-network dentists upon request. When planning treatment with an in-network dentist, you do not have to worry as much about surprise bills coming in the mail.

• An out-of-network dentist can choose to accept your plan — if it’s a PPO — and depending on what their fees are, there may or may not be a percentage of your dental work that the insurance doesn’t cover. You may not know what that balance is until after your claims have been processed. You will need to seek the dentist out yourself, as your insurance carrier prefers you go to someone within the same network. But if your favorite dentist is out of network, you can keep going to their office!

• Some dentists don’t accept dental insurance benefits up front. They require the patient to pay for their service in full, and then process the claims on their behalf. Any reimbursements are sent directly to you, the patient.

Get the Most Out of Your Investment

Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry accepts most dental insurance benefits. Some of the plans that our patients have are through carriers like Aetna, Cigna, MetLife, Delta Dental, Humana, and dozens of others. We’ll always work closely with you to help you maximize your benefit allowances while minimizing out of pocket expenses. Call us today to find out how!
